Who is a micro influencer?

A micro influencer is someone on social media platforms that holds a small audience in a particular niche. By our definition a micro-influencer is someone between 1 – 99k followers on those platforms.

  • They must have an active following (5% minimum engagement rate on each post)
  • Their audience should be as close to your target audience as possible.

A good place to find influencers relevant to your company? Look to who is following you now. Spend some time watching not only who follows your brand on social but is actively engaging with your content. Then ask:

  • Are they posting things with a style relevant to my business and brand?
  • Are they likely to fit my budget?
  • Are they suitable to meet my goals?  

If the answers are yes, then it’s time to reach out to them.

Using Hashtags to find Micro influencers

#cafe is not going to get you anywhere. Because it doesn’t narrow the search at all. What you need are specific tags. Search for your business name, something very specific about your company or a colloquial phrase in the language of your target customers. You can also look to your competitors accounts and see if people are using branded hashtags for their audience to contribute too. Find their top posts and you will find influencers relevant to your audience.

Finding Micro Influencers by Location.

This one is great for targeting geographic areas with your influencer marketing campaigns. Searching the specific areas relevant to your customers is a great way to figure out who is popular and posting in those place. Simply search for your city, local areas of interest or even your competitors locations and look for  the people who have the most popular posts in this location. You can look as broadly as the country you’re in, or as specific as “Hard Rock Cafe”.

Especially if they work frequently together, they will likely have very creative content ideas your customers will love. By building a really strong relationship with your creator, they become a trusted source of information. You can also ask your most loving customers who might be eager to help. Look within instagram for the “why” beyond the creator. Many instagram micro influencers are celebrities, models, Youtuber’s, bloggers, musicians etc. They carry audiences on other platforms. Once you have narrowed it down to your top picks, look beyond instagram to see where else their audience is. This will allow you to learn more about the creators values, and might inspire your decision to work with that person.

Imagine if your favourite instagram influencer also had a small following on Linkedin who you could engage with a different message. Think big picture, and go crazy. That’s when influencer marketing works.
